Understanding the Nature of Summer Storms in Charlotte | SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte

6/17/2024 (Permalink)

lightning strike across stormy purple sky Whether its storm damage cleanup or restoration, SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte is ready to respond in a moments notice to your call.

As the temperatures rise and the humidity settles in, summer storms become a common occurrence in the Charlotte area. These storms bring heavy rain, strong winds, and sometimes even hail, posing a threat to both property and personal safety. Understanding the nature of these storms is the first step in preparing for them effectively.

Charlotte experiences a variety of summer storms, ranging from typical thunderstorms to more severe weather events like hurricanes and tropical storms. Thunderstorms can develop rapidly, bringing sudden downpours and lightning strikes. Hurricanes and tropical storms, although less frequent, can cause significant damage with their high winds and torrential rain.

Preparing Your Home for Summer Storms

Preparing your home for summer storms is essential to minimize damage and ensure your family’s safety. Start by inspecting your property for any vulnerabilities, such as loose shingles, damaged trees, or clogged gutters. Secure loose outdoor items, such as patio furniture and garden decorations, to prevent them from becoming projectiles in strong winds.

It’s also crucial to have a plan in place for power outages. Invest in a generator or ensure you have an adequate supply of flashlights, batteries, and non-perishable food items. Keep important documents, such as insurance policies and identification, in a waterproof container, and consider installing surge protectors to safeguard electronic devices.

Staying Safe During Summer Storms

When a summer storm approaches, prioritize safety above all else. If you hear thunder or see lightning, seek shelter indoors immediately. Avoid taking shelter under trees or near metal objects, as they can attract lightning strikes. If you’re driving when a storm hits, pull over to a safe location and wait until it passes before continuing your journey.

Stay informed about weather conditions by monitoring local news outlets or using weather apps on your smartphone. Sign up for emergency alerts to receive timely notifications about severe weather warnings in your area. By staying informed, you can make informed decisions to protect yourself and your loved ones during summer storms.

Prepare for Summer Storms

Don’t wait until it’s too late to prepare for summer storms. Contact SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte today to learn more about our storm damage restoration services and how we can help you safeguard your home against the elements.

From emergency board-up services to water extraction and mold remediation, we’re here to assist you every step of the way. Stay safe this summer by being prepared for whatever Mother Nature may bring.

Preparing for a Power Outage During a Summer Thunderstorm | SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte

6/3/2024 (Permalink)

dark sky with purple lightening bolt shooting across it Stay safe this summer with SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte's thunderstorm safety tips! Be prepared and stay informed to protect your home and family.

Summer thunderstorms can be breathtaking to watch, with their booming thunder and dazzling lightning displays. However, they can also bring a host of problems, including power outages.

While it’s impossible to prevent these outages entirely, being prepared can make a big difference in how you handle them. Here are some tips to help you prepare for a power outage during a summer thunderstorm.

Build an Emergency Kit

One of the first steps in preparing for a power outage is building an emergency kit. This kit should contain essential items to help you and your family stay safe and comfortable during the outage. Some items to include are:

  • Flashlights and batteries: These will provide light when the power is out. Make sure to have several flashlights on hand and enough batteries to last for an extended period.

  • Non-perishable food and water: Stock up on canned goods, dry snacks, and bottled water that won’t spoil during a power outage.

  • First aid kit: Include bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any necessary medications.

  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio: This will allow you to stay informed about the weather and any emergency updates.

  • Blankets and warm clothing: Even in the summer, nights can get chilly, especially if the power outage lasts for an extended period.

Protect Your Electronics

During a thunderstorm, power surges can damage electronic devices. To protect your electronics, consider investing in surge protectors for your home. These devices can absorb excess voltage and prevent it from damaging your appliances, computers, and other electronic devices.

Unplug sensitive electronics during a thunderstorm to further reduce the risk of damage. It’s also a good idea to back up important data on your computer and other electronic devices regularly. Cloud storage or external hard drives can provide a safe backup in case of damage or loss during a power outage.

Create a Family Emergency Plan

Having a family emergency plan in place can help ensure that everyone knows what to do in the event of a power outage. Sit down with your family to discuss:

  • Where to meet: Choose a designated meeting spot in case you get separated during the outage.

  • Emergency contacts: Make a list of emergency phone numbers, including those of family members, neighbors, and utility companies.

  • Safety procedures: Discuss what to do in case of a fire, medical emergency, or other dangerous situations.

By following these tips, you can be better prepared for a power outage during a summer thunderstorm. Remember to build an emergency kit, protect your electronics, and create a family emergency plan. Being prepared can help you stay safe and comfortable until the power is restored.

Guidelines for Preparing for Storms With Anxious Children | SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte

5/15/2024 (Permalink)

family watching lightning storm from inside home with candles due to power outage When the storm has passed, call SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte to help you recover.

The roar of thunder, flashes of lightning and blaring tornado sirens create a chaotic scene. Your dog paces anxiously, while your kids are on edge. Storm situations can be terrifying, especially in our community.

While we can’t control the weather, we can prepare how to react effectively to keep everyone calm and safe, especially our little ones.

Keep reading for tips on how to plan for storms as a family, ensuring everyone remains calm, cool and collected when emergencies strike.

Recognizing the Signs

Cloudy days vs. sunny ones may seem obvious, but knowing when clouds signal danger can be more difficult. Teach your kids to spot rotating clouds, dark or green skies and the sound of thunder and lightning, prompting them to seek shelter immediately.

Familiarize them with the sound of tornado sirens during tests, helping them learn to recognize the sound and its significance. Practice listening for the sirens and time how quickly they can reach the designated safe shelter.

Preparation Is Key

Have you crafted a storm emergency plan with your family? Discuss how and when to reach your safe shelter, and ensure your emergency kit is packed and ready.

Choose the lowest level of your home, ideally a windowless inner room, as your safe haven. Keep the area clear and practice building a fort with heavy objects like tables or desks for added protection.

Involve your kids in assembling the emergency kit, selecting essentials, favorite snacks and shelf-stable water. Personalize flashlights with their names, and add extra batteries, candles, matches and medications.

It’s also a good idea to let your kids choose special games or activities to use during severe weather situations, providing a welcome distraction during power outages or extended shelter periods.

Maintaining Calm

Severe weather can unsettle even adults, let alone children. Reassure them that severe destruction or direct tornado hits are rare occurrences. Most storm damage typically targets roofs, siding and property surroundings.

Keep your kids calm and engaged during weather events, using a light-hearted approach to narrate the unfolding events. Together, you’ll navigate severe weather with confidence and composure.

Storm damage should always be addressed quickly. Contact SERVPRO® day or night for the restoration services you need.

Avoiding Mold and Mildew: Tackling Water Leaks Quickly | SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte

5/1/2024 (Permalink)

water dripping from ceiling into a large puddle on tile floor Trust our team at SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte to provide comprehensive services for a full recovery for all your water damage restoration needs.

The last thing you need to deal with after a long day of work is an unexpected home disaster. You’ve worked hard enough, so you shouldn’t have to worry about your home on top of everything else!

Unfortunately, home disasters are unpredictable and tend to happen at the most inconvenient times. A busted pipe, an open window during a rainstorm or a faulty appliance can all leave you with a watery mess.

The key to a quick recovery is a quick response! Our team will respond right away to help dry out your home and to tackle your repairs so you can avoid further issues like mold or stinky mildew.

Tracking Down the Source

Water is constantly flowing in and out of our homes, which also means that there is a constant threat of suffering from a water disaster. The moment that water gets where it shouldn’t, it can begin to cause problems. It will start to leak and seep into your floorboards and can easily get behind your walls. Once it settles in, it can be really hard to dry out on your own.

The visible water can easily be cleaned up by a mop or some towels, but the water that has made its way into harder-to-reach areas is not so easily cleaned. This moisture can’t dry out as efficiently, which means it will turn stagnant and will linger for a much longer time period.

Over the course of a couple of days, this lingering moisture will start to impact your home in a variety of ways. It will start to rust metal and swell support beams, and mold can start to take hold after 24–48 hours.

Addressing Odor Issues

Your job isn’t done once the original mess is cleaned up, unfortunately. Pay attention to the way your home smells over the course of the next week. Mold and mildew often emit a musty or earthy smell, which can be pretty identifiable when it gets strong enough.

If you notice this smell starting to get stronger in the room where the disaster occurred, it’s time to get us on the phone. We will arrive quickly and use our specialized equipment to locate the source of the stink, even if it is behind your walls or under your floors. We will filter the air after turning off the HVAC system and by shutting off your vents, and we will use our odor removal equipment to ensure all of the odor particles are removed.

We will work hard to ensure your water damage is repaired and the air is fresh, clean and safe for you to breathe.

Don’t ignore signs of a water leak. Contact SERVPRO® for a full recovery.

Disaster situations are confusing enough, aren’t they? The initial panic, the chaos of an unexpected situation and the sheer danger that your family could be in can all add up together to create a really unfortunate situation.

Even more unfortunately, however, is that your experience is not over right when the disaster situation has been handled and controlled. You still will have to navigate your recovery process.

That’s where we come in! We will make sure to facilitate a quick restoration no matter your situation, and we will also handle the more unexpected parts of disaster recovery, like navigating your insurance claim.

Recovering Quickly

It doesn’t matter if your home suffers from fire, flood or storm damage, recovering quickly after the fact is crucial. The longer you wait to call authorities or address the damage, the worse your situation can become. Compounding damage can lead to further issues like structural integrity problems and mold infestations.

Focus first and foremost on keeping your family safe, of course, but we want you to get us on the phone as soon as you have ensured that everyone is accounted for and is uninjured.

We will ask all kinds of questions to help create the most reliable restoration plan and then we will be on our way to you shortly! In the meantime, we will encourage you to do things like shut off water valves or open windows for ventilation. We will also ask that you take some general photos of the damage so we can include those images in your insurance claim.

Leaving the Restoration to Us

You can relax as soon as we pull up your drive. Our team will get right to work to secure your home from further damage like boarding up windows or pulling fragile possessions out of the affected area. While this happens, we will also get to work on your insurance claim process by documenting and cataloging as much as we can.

We will create a detailed list of your losses and take our own set of professional photos, noting important damage that your insurance company will want to see. We will compile all of this information and then submit it to your agent so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

Our team will follow all insurance inspection protocols to help keep your costs as low as possible, and we will also work as hard as we can to save your possessions rather than having them all replaced. We know how precious your belongings can be, and we will do our best to save as much of them as possible.

When a disaster strikes, call us to make your recovery process—insurance claims and all—simple.

Back to the Basics of Flood Damage Prevention | SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte

4/1/2024 (Permalink)

rain water pooling on a hardwood floor after a storm with a man in work boots walking through it SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte is ready to help in a moments notice after spring showers leak in to your home or business.

We can all find success when we take life back to the basics. Whether you are trying to teach your child his or her math homework, trying to figure out where a recipe went wrong or troubleshooting a leaking appliance, starting from the beginning and working your way out can be immensely helpful.

The basics of life also apply when it comes to disaster preparation and storm preparedness. While we all know that Mother Nature can’t be tamed, we can take certain steps now so we can be prepared for what is to come this season.

Flooding emergencies can be really scary if you aren’t prepared, so we offer some helpful tips to help you stay in control no matter what the year has in store for our community.

Knowing the Flood Zones in Charlotte

Flooding isn’t just reserved for weather phenomena. It can also happen due to manmade disasters like burst water mains or faulty appliances in your home. If your flooding situation is caused by something like this, you might be able to recover a bit faster than if your flooding situation is caused by the weather. That’s because the solutions for manmade issues are usually centered around turning off water valves or disconnecting appliances.

The same can’t be said for flash floods or other weather-related water emergencies because we can’t simply turn off the sky! Any time it rains heavily in our community or if you live in a low-lying neighborhood, flash flooding conditions can be really impactful.

You still need to prepare your home even if your property is not listed as a designated flood zone. Adding extra length to your downspouts can help move water farther away from your foundation or adding extra drainage or a rain garden can help give the runoff a more productive place to collect.

If your property has tree coverage, it is important for you to take a few more preventive steps. Invest in a reliable gutter system to help move the water down and away from your home, but you should also make sure that the gutters have debris covers on them to keep out leaves and other clogging materials.

Preparing Can Prevent

Protecting your home against flooding can have a serious impact when storms come to town. Even if your home does experience some level of flooding or water damage during a particular storm, it can teach you a lot about your property so you can take steps to prevent the situation from happening again.

If your basement always floods when it rains, it may be helpful to look into a professional grading of your yard. This can help slope the earth away from your home so the rain moves away instead of backward into your foundation. You can also take less intensive steps like adding absorbing landscaping materials, such as mulch, around your home.

Taking it back inside your home, you should be checking your windows and doors regularly for signs of wear and tear. Old caulk lines should be replaced, and any sagging issues should be addressed right away. Additionally, have your sump pump inspected annually so you can rest easy knowing that it should work when you need it most.

When in doubt, take your preparations back to the basics so you can provide your home with the protection it needs when dealing with flood emergencies.

Dealing With the Ick Factor: Sewage Leaks | SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte

3/20/2024 (Permalink)

sewage water pooling on a kitchen floor after a leak SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte is always ready to respond to your call when biohazard and sewage incidents strike.

What gives you the ick? Dirty kitchen floors? Discovering the container of moldy food previously forgotten about in the back of your fridge? In addition to these personal experiences, we would bet that suffering from a sewage leak would also be somewhere at the top of this list.?

Having sewage in any part of your home where it shouldn’t be is not only gross, but it is also a really dangerous situation to find yourself in. Thankfully, our team is here to handle your entire cleanup and recovery.

Responding To The Leak

Sewage backups can happen unexpectedly if your pipes become clogged or blocked in some way. If the waste water can’t flow down your pipes the way it should, it will eventually be forced backwards up the pipe and can wind up in your toilets, sink or even bathtub. Sewage can also leak out of your pipes if you have any holes or wear and tear along the pipe lines.

No matter how the leak starts, tackling the problem right away should become your top priority. Sewage is considered a toxic substance and you should never handle it without the proper safety gear and training. Sewage can harbor all kinds of dangerous organisms like viruses, bacteria and microbes that can make you sick or worse, they could be deadly.?

Avoid coming into contact with the contaminated water, but if you are able to reach the water shutoff valve without getting dirty, do that right away to help stop the flow of sewage. Once the situation is partially under control, start opening windows and turn on a few fans to let the fumes escape. Close off the area to keep your family or customers out of harm’s way and then give us a call.?

Where We Come Into Play

Dealing with toxic substances can be really dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing. This is why a quick call to SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte is always the answer when it comes to biohazard cleanup! Our team is highly trained and we are always equipped with the latest and most secure safety gear.?

While you wait for our arrival, go ahead and pull out your phone and start taking pictures of the damage right away. Obviously, these images aren’t going to be printed and framed any time soon, but they are necessary for your insurance claim. Your agent will want to see the situation as it happened, so having these pictures will help support your claim.

Once we arrive at your door, we will focus on locating the reason for the leak and addressing repairs right at the source. We certainly don’t want you to have to go through this again! At the same time, our cleaning crew will get to work on removing the sewage and standing water. We will request that you stay out of the area during this part to save your nose (and your stomachs) from the least pleasant part of this type of recovery.?

After the space is cleaned and sanitized, we will be able to categorize the damage and we will work towards your reconstruction. Depending on how long the waste water was left to linger on your floors, you could be dealing with significant structural damage. Our team will be sure to rebuild and reconstruct your home with confidence!?

Sewage leaks should always be cleaned up by professionals. Call SERVPRO and we will take care of you.

The Best Alert? The Alert That Works for You | SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte

3/1/2024 (Permalink)

heavy rain pouring down on an outdoor metal roof in a storm Let SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte help you get from April showers to May flowers.

The spring season in the Charlotte area is always an interesting one! It can be warm and dry, mild and rainy, or a combination of everything in between. In addition, we all need to keep an eye out for serious thunderstorms and severe weather.

While we can all glance at the sky when the clouds start to change, it is important to know far in advance when severe storms are in the area. Check out our tips below for some easy ways to stay connected and stay in the know when storms are on the horizon.

Connecting With the Internet

Is your phone in your hand right now? Or is it right next to you near your computer? We are constantly surrounded by electronics, especially our phones, so it should be no secret that the majority of our weather information comes from apps and other online sources. National Wireless Emergency Alerts is an alert system that can be issued automatically to your phone, just be sure that your notifications are turned on. You can (and should) also have an additional weather app that is specific to our location.

However, don’t just download the first weather app you see! Weather apps are created for different reasons, and some of them solely exist to create exaggerated or outlandish forecasts for likes or engagement. Stick with nationally recognized organizations or locally trusted sources. Check out the city of Charlotte’s website to make sure you have the most updated information and local alerts ready to go.

News stations and other weather channels are also great resources when a storm is in the area. Live footage can track as a system works its way across the city and local anchors can give real-time information of the conditions and can offer advice on when to shelter in place.

Other Alerts to Utilize

While having the internet is so helpful when it comes to emergency situations, it is unfortunately not guaranteed to have at any given time. Be sure to have at least one alert system that doesn’t require power in order to work. Once the power goes out, your TV won’t work and your phone and computer batteries will only work until they are drained.

Stay connected without power in a variety of ways! Locate your closest weather siren and walk around your house to listen for it during tests to see if you can hear it from any room in your home.

A helpful investment when it comes to weather alerts is in an NOAA weather radio. Weather radios will work regardless of your power situation as they can often be powered through hand-crank power or by solar power. Weather radios are also portable, which means you can take them with you as you navigate your property or shelter safely in your home.

We hope you have a safe spring weather season, but remember that we are here for you if your home or property suffers from any sort of damage. We will put your space back together again in no time at all.

Serious storms can cause serious property damage. Call SERVPRO® 247 for immediate restoration assistance.

Preparing for the Worst

While we don’t want the potential of a disaster to consume our thoughts, it is important to have a plan. If your team knows what to do before, during and after a disaster situation, you can stay in control and respond as an organized unit instead of devolving into chaos.

Communication is key when it comes to disaster responses, so focus on making sure your employees are connected with each other and that there is a strong chain of command. Your staff needs to know who is in charge of what ahead of a potential disaster.

In addition, they should all be familiar with where your emergency exits are located and how to access water shut-off valves and fire extinguishers. While your custodial staff may have these responsibilities handled, it is important for everyone to have a basic understanding of your building just in case.

Once the disaster has occurred and you have surveyed your building, it is important to keep your staff in good spirits and help everyone figure out where to go in the aftermath. Set up a remote work strategy or have a backup location in mind that your team can go to for the foreseeable future.

Recovering With SERVPRO®

Now that your team is secure and everyone is safe, it’s time to turn your attention to your recovery. Without the proper support and recovery plan, it can be really easy to experience long-term or even permanent closures. Call SERVPRO right away so we can get started on your restoration.

Staying Warm Without Starting House Fires | SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte

1/16/2024 (Permalink)

brick chimney with lit fire logs Fire safety is a top priority for us at SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte this winter. Keep your home safe with these helpful tips!

The temperatures have dropped, and we are all spending much more time indoors at this time of year. While we are grateful to not suffer through extreme winter weather, we do see our fair share of chilly days and snow is not out of the question on any given year.

While we hunker down for the season, many of us lean on our heat sources like fireplaces and space heaters for some extra warmth. Unfortunately, that’s also what causes a spike in house fires across our community. Our SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte team explains more about how to stay warm without starting an out-of-control fire below.

Safeguarding Your Fireplace

A softly crackling fire can be the perfect backdrop for the season, but only if your fireplace is properly prepared. Wood-burning fireplaces need to be cleaned regularly to remove ash buildup, and the chimney should be inspected and cleaned to remove creosote buildup.

Keep flammable materials and possessions far away from the fireplace as well as off the mantle, and make sure you are checking your smoke detectors regularly and replacing batteries as needed. If your fireplace is gas or electric, you should be inspecting it before turning it on to check for loose lines or leaks.

Space Heaters

We all love the portability and convenience that space heaters can offer, but they can be dangerous if they are misused. In fact, space heater mishaps are responsible for 1,700 house fires every year.

The best way to avoid space heater fires is to make sure the surface you set yours up on is able to withstand the heat. Choose a hard, nonflammable surface that is far away from things like curtains and couch cushions, and always check the cord for signs of fraying before turning it on.

Create a three-foot barrier around your heaters to keep your kids and pets away from it, and never leave it unattended in a room. In addition, you should always be turning off your space heater completely before going to bed.

Safety Features to Look For

Not all space heaters are good investments, so doing your research before buying anything is always recommended. Just because it’s cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean its a good (or safe) deal!

First, choose a reliable company that has passed all of their certifications for safety and check their reviews to make sure it has been a reliable purchase for other users. A helpful feature that you should consider is a safety shutoff switch. These switches are programmed to turn your heater off after a certain period of use, which can be really helpful for busy families or if you have trouble remembering to turn things off.

Finally, you need to inspect the cord that is attached to the heater. It should be well-made and not showing any signs of fraying or have any loose connections, and it should also be at least six feet long so you can easily set it up in a safe location.

Have a safe and warm winter season! If you do suffer from any sort of fire damage, call SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte right away for a quick and reliable restoration.

A quick fire damage restoration is just a phone call away. Call SERVPRO® for immediate assistance.

Discovering Water Leaks With Confidence | SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte

1/2/2024 (Permalink)

close up of condensation on window pane and ledge Water damage can happen anywhere in your home. Call SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte to restore water damage on your property 24/7, 365.

Water is flowing in and out of your home all of the time. It flows out of your taps when you wash your hands, it drains down your utility sink when you run a load of laundry and it flows into your ice maker to slowly become ice cubes that will eventually chill your drinks.

Because of this close relationship that we have with water, the risk of suffering from water damage at any point is always constant. While it is not possible to always prevent water damage from occurring, knowing where it often starts can help you track down a problem quicker and with more confidence.

Your Sink Lines

You probably don’t think much of it when you wash your hands and watch the water flow down the drain, but that water has to go somewhere! You have water lines all over your home that are constantly pulling used water away and replacing it with fresh water. As your home gets older, these lines can start to experience wear and tear and can suffer leaks at any time.

Once a water leak starts under a cupboard or beneath a sink, it can quickly seep into your walls and floors and leak throughout your entire room or area of your house. Try to make it a habit to check your water lines when you are cleaning and address potential issues right away so you can prevent a much larger problem later.

Around Your Appliances

Having appliances in our home to help us accomplish tasks can be such a time saver! We rely on dishwashers, washing machines and water heaters on a daily basis, which also means that they could leak any day without much warning.

These types of leaks can be hard to spot right away because they often start underneath or behind your appliances. Try to pull your appliances away from the wall often to check for signs of damage like water spots, puddles or mold growth.

Under Floors and Behind Walls

Water pipes are located all over your home, but most of them are tucked away behind your walls. Unfortunately, water leaks can happen there as well and that can be really troublesome for your home. Over time, those water leaks can get into your floors and can be really hard to dry out on your own.

Water leaks behind walls and under floors often don’t show signs until the damage has already occurred. Because of that, keep an eye out for any dark spots on your walls or a musty odor that indicates a mold problem.

Your Windows

Experiencing occasional condensation on your windows is normal, but that condensation can linger or drip down onto your windowsills, which can cause the wood around your window casings and trim to swell and warp. Run your fingers along your windows after a rain and wipe down lingering condensation right away.

Moisture can also get into your home through your windows if there are any small gaps or cracks around the windows themselves. Even a small leak can build up over time and lead to serious structural integrity issues around your windows.

Unfortunately, not all water damage can be prevented. That’s where SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte comes into play! Our team offers quick and reliable water damage restoration no matter the extent of your damage and we are ready to help you 247.

Don’t ignore signs of water damage! Call SERVPRO® for a quick restoration.

Training Your Employees for a Fire Emergency | SERVPRO® of Northeast Charlotte

3/30/2023 (Permalink)

"two fire extinguisher hanging on a tan interior wall” Dealing with the aftermath of a commercial fire? SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte is your local restoration expert.

Dealing with emergencies at work is part of owning or operating a commercial business. Small situations can often be handled by yourself or your maintenance crew, but larger problems can impact your entire staff.

Whenever fire is concerned, it is crucial that your team understands how to react to help minimize the situation.

Fires can create chaotic situations, so having a plan that your employees can follow can help keep everyone focused and safe. Teaching your staff fire safety basics and how to use a fire extinguisher can go a long way in an emergency!

Using a Fire Extinguisher

Having a fire extinguisher on your property is one of the foundational parts of fire safety. If you have one, OSHA requires that you give your employees the training they need in order to operate one. This includes how to work the fire extinguisher(s) on your property and what situations require one.

Don’t be afraid to get hands-on with your training and let your employees handle your fire extinguisher. Get it out of the case or storage area and let them practice aiming it and pulling the pin. It’s even better if you can have them practice putting out an imaginary fire by sweeping across the flames and standing back at a safe distance of six to eight feet.

Having an easy way to remember how to use a fire extinguisher can increase your employees’ chances of using it correctly when it is really needed. Teach them the acronym PASS!

The fundamentals of fire extinguishers and fire safety cannot be overlooked, and should be taught at least once a year to your staff.

Also, don’t forget to assign certain roles to a few trusted or veteran staff members. If you have someone on your team who is confident and focused in stressful situations, have him or her be the point person for fighting the fire. Others can also help by calling 911 and getting the rest of your team to safety.

Prioritize Your Team

Fire reacts differently in different situations. Small fires in restaurants are much different than if a fire breaks out in one of the local business district buildings, like off of Hendry Road. If the situation escalates, it can become dangerous really quickly for your team.

Safety should always be your main focus during your training, so ensure that your staff understand that their safety is your top priority in any situation. If at any point any of your employees feel unsafe or uncomfortable staying to fight the fire, teach them that it is OK for them to seek a safe way out of the building.

Building a fire safety plan with your team can help make your staff’s response to an emergency much more seamless. Using these tips can build your employees’ confidence in any fire situation in the future.

The 3 Largest Storm Damage Threats | SERVPRO® of Northeast Charlotte

9/28/2022 (Permalink)

"a large lightning strike off in the distance of a dark sky" When you suffer storm-related damage to your home or business, make SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte your first call.

If you see severe weather in the forecast, chances are that there is always an element of worry in the back of your mind. Storm damages are very real and common when the weather gets severe enough! Thankfully, a lot of homes nowadays are built to withstand severe weather, but there is always a risk involved when it comes to Mother Nature.

We address the three largest threats to our homes in this latest blog post! Water, wind and impact damages are among the most common reasons for home damage, and if the incoming storm is producing all three threats, you could have a big mess on your hands.

However, just because there is a storm in our area, it doesn’t mean that your home will suffer any sort of damage. It all depends on the incoming system and the weather it is producing. Your location in the city, the landscape around your home and the very structure of your home also come into play as well.

In Charlotte, we see severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, flash flooding and winter storms, so it is crucial to be prepared for the variety of threats that we are susceptible to.

Wind, water and impact damages can come out of any of the above threats, so let’s break them down below:

Wind

Wind can come with tornadoes and any sort of severe storm. When it blows quickly enough, it can cause massive amounts of localized damage. Even thunderstorms alone can produce winds over 100 mph.

Wind has dual threats. By itself, it can sheer off house siding or pull shingles off the roof. And wind can make trees and other large objects seem weightless, allowing them to become projectiles.

Make sure to stay inside if a straight-line wind warning is issued or if the wind speeds start to pick up.

If you have enough of a heads-up before any incoming storm, you can tie down any loose furniture or play sets in your yard and also clean up any dead trees or limbs. Reducing the amount of hazards in your yard can keep your damage risk low.

Water

We rely on water from storms to keep our lawns, trees and gardens thriving, but if the rain is heavy enough, it can cause massive headaches for homeowners! Water can flood basements, weaken walls and floors, and cause exponential mold growth if left untreated.

To reduce your risk of widespread water damage, make sure that any landscaping you do ensures water flows away from the foundation of your house, or consider installing a rain garden! A rain garden can enhance the beauty of your yard while also providing a place for all of the storm water to flow to.

If your home has gutters, keep them clear of any blockages. When your gutters can function properly, it helps move water off of your roof and away from your home.

Impact

Perhaps the most scary of the three is “impact damage.” Whenever a large tree or outdoor object falls or is tossed into your home, there is the potential for catastrophic and costly damages.

Do your best to keep your trees maintained by trimming them regularly and removing any dead limbs quickly. You can also try to secure any large outdoor furniture if you have enough time ahead of a storm.

The cost associated with severe weather damages is huge! In just 2021 alone, Americans reported over $145 billion in damages. This number can be reduced by incorporating some of our storm preparation tips!

When you do suffer some sort of storm damage to your home or property, we want to be your first phone call at SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte. We have a quick response time and can get going on your restoration project right away.

When you suffer storm-related damage to your home or business, it’s important that you know who to call! Contact us today to get your storm damage restoration started faster.

Reducing the Flooding Risk for Your Home | SERVPRO® of Northeast Charlotte

9/28/2022 (Permalink)

"a group of residential homes with major flooding in back yards" Experienced water damage in your home? Call SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte to get the restoration process started right away.

Whenever water is involved in a natural disaster or home accident, the damages can be immediate and expansive. It only takes an inch or two to cause lasting problems to your home.

Were you aware that not all insurance policies cover flood damage? Knowing that should be the motivation you need to prepare as much as you can to prevent the damage before it even happens.

Did you know that there are 19,841 acres of land located in a floodplain in Mecklenburg County? Whenever there is heavy rain, the risk of flooding in floodplains increases because these areas were naturally developed to hold a lot of water. You can use this helpful tool to see if your personal address is located in a flood zone.

Starting Outside Your Home

Gutters are a great tool when it comes to protecting your home from flood risk! A properly working gutter system keeps water off of your roof and helps it flow down and away from your foundation.

If you love to garden and grow your own food, you can actually use your garden as a natural flood prevention tool! Plant your garden in an area of your yard that seems to collect a lot of water and make sure to angle it away from your home so that the falling rain flows down to your veggies and flowers.

Protecting your propane and fuel tanks is also a great idea before any incoming weather. Anchor them to the ground so you don’t lose them in a flood, and if you have any electrical outlets located on the ground, it may be a good idea to try to relocate them to a higher spot.

Inside the Home

Protecting your lowest levels and basement starts with a sturdy foundation! Many water issues can be traced back to a crack or a leak in your foundation. Inspect your foundation blocks often to catch any cracking and seal them up right away.

Protecting your home from flooding can be cost-effective if you take simple steps every day. Being prepared will benefit you in the long run!

Flooding can also originate from issues inside the home. All it takes is for your washing machine to overflow or a leaky pipe to burst for you to have a large issue on your hands.

If you notice any small leaking or water drips, address the problem immediately to hopefully stop the problem in its tracks. Installing a leak sensor can also help catch any problems right as they are happening.

Protect the things that you love most in your home! Precious photographs and keepsakes should be kept in an area of your home that is safe from flooding, and it is even better if you get them high off the ground in a waterproof container. Important documents and your emergency plan should also be copied and kept in a similar area so that you are always ready for anything.

Experienced water damage in your home? Call SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte today to get your restoration completed faster.

Your Home’s Risk of Lightning Fires | SERVPRO® of Northeast Charlotte

9/28/2022 (Permalink)

"multiple lightning strikes off in distance of dark purple night sky " If you are dealing with smoke or fire damage from a recent fire, call SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte to learn about a restoration solution for your is

Whenever fire affects your home, it can be dangerous and cause extensive damage. Thankfully, many internal home fires can be prevented by staying attentive to any cooking or being responsible for flames you light. However, when the fire risk originates naturally, it can be much harder to prevent.

Thankfully, being personally struck by lightning is still a rare occurrence, but lightning strikes on houses are actually relatively common. Approximately 70,000 damage claims were reported due to lightning in 2020. If your home is struck by lightning, take the following precautions to help reduce your risk of damage or injury.

Lightning Formation

Lightning begins as a giant spark that travels from the clouds to the ground (or your roof). Normally, lightning is associated with severe weather, but it can also happen during forest fires, heavy snowstorms and even dry conditions.

Lightning and Your Home

If lightning does strike your home, it can be immediately a dangerous situation and will often start a fire due to the intense heat and transfer of electrical current. If a fire does break out, you might not notice it right away if it starts in your attic or in one of your walls.

Even if you don’t see the fire, you will probably immediately know what happened because lightning strikes are immensely loud and can produce a burning smell as they burn whatever they touch on the way down.

Installing a lightning rod can help reduce the impact of damages to your home. A lightning rod is designed to help deflect and absorb the impact of a lightning strike so your home doesn’t have to take the full force of its energy.

It might also be a good idea to buy a surge protector for your electrical panel to avoid a major problem if the strike hits your electrical box.

Lightning in the Area

If your home avoids a direct lightning hit during a storm, that doesn’t necessarily mean you are out of the woods! If a strike hits a neighboring house, it can also start an out-of-control fire if the flames aren’t controlled quickly. An average of 9,000 wildfires are caused by lightning strikes every year.

Reduce the risk of your property catching fire by cleaning up brush or dead leaves, and check your smoke detectors every month to ensure they are ready to alert you of any danger.

If you do encounter a fire, call 911 immediately and exit your home as soon as you can. When the fire is out and it is safe to re-enter your home, call us at SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte.

Fire damage can be extensive and tricky to restore, but we are highly trained and passionate about the restoration process. We will get you back into your fully restored home right away!

Spring Showers & Other Weather Hazards | SERVPRO® of Northeast Charlotte

3/7/2022 (Permalink)

"an image with a cloudy, rainy, sunny and snowy sky" Extreme temperature changes can lead to the possibility of severe weather. SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte is a click away if you experience any damage

The largest nations in the world are Russia and Canada. The United States is a close second though, based on total land mass.

Having such a large nation means that “spring weather” can mean many different things for many people. Each season brings about distinct weather patterns, and the spring season is no different. And as we all know, different weather types can bring different weather threats.

The spring season is right around the corner, officially starting on March 20. Here’s a good look at what to expect in different areas of the country.

First up, the Pacific Northwest region. The weather here is wet with heavy rains, which can lead to flooding or water damage. In higher elevation areas, they are also possibly dealing with melting snow and ice, which cause problems of their own.

Moving to the Upper Midwest and Northeast regions, they are the ones that deal with the winter weather more than anyone else. In fact, they jump right over the spring season it seems, because during the spring months they are still dealing with snowstorms or blizzards! Sounds awfully cold to us here in North Carolina, right?

The West Coast, on the other hand, basically has a non-existent winter. Rather than cold weather, they are preparing for and dealing with excessive heat waves. These intense temperatures can put people in danger, but they also combine with dry conditions to create a fire hazard.

When you look at the Midwest, from Iowa to Texas, this is the middle part of the United States, where there are much drier, windy conditions. During the spring, they may face windstorms, derechos and wildfires. Because it’s so dry and windy, these wildfires can be easily spread and cause mass destruction. And as if that’s not enough, part of the region is also “Tornado Alley,” which is where tornadoes are most likely to occur.

And in our area, the Southeast region, we’re looking forward to pleasant temperatures and sunny days. But the spring also brings abundant rain at times, along with the threat of severe thunderstorms and even tornadoes. We’re landlocked here in Charlotte, but for our southern neighbors along the coast, rip currents and early-season hurricanes can also be a factor.

No matter where you live in this great nation, weather hazards are everywhere! That’s why whether you are on the West Coast or in the Southeast region, you must always be prepared.

If extreme weather leaves you with damage from water, fire or other elements, help is a click away. Contact SERVPRO for fast, expert recovery.

Running a business can be a lot of hard work, dedication, time and fun! That’s right—it can be fun, but fun doesn’t happen or make you successful if you don’t have the other qualities as well. And SERVPRO is here to help you with those top three qualities.

When you’re struck by a natural disaster or an accident, it can take over your business in a matter of minutes! So it’s essential that you have some kind of plan in place, and that’s what we want to help you with. And 20% of the businesses that do reopen are forced to shut down within the first year of business.

This is why it’s important that you have a plan in place. It’s scary to see that three-quarters of all small businesses don’t have an emergency plan in place. Let’s change that!

As a locally owned and operated business, we are ready to help other local businesses. Whether your business operates in Charlotte, River Run or Mallard Creek, we can help you prepare an Emergency Ready Plan.

But oftentimes we get busy and skip over important things like carpet or upholstery cleaning. That’s why we provide you with a heavy-duty cleaning, so that you can focus on more important things.

Specialty cleaning. We can provide you with document restoration, air duct cleaning or even biohazard cleanup. No matter what it is, if it can get dirty, we can work to get it clean.

Construction. Sometimes, disasters or accidents can take a major toll on your home or business and require a reconstruction rather than a simple restoration! With SERVPRO to call on, you can rest assured that we can handle that and get the facility back to its preloss condition.

Add 24-hour service and an easy insurance process to all this, and the picture becomes clear—when you need cleanup and recovery of any kind, you can trust SERVPRO to get the job done

The 4 Components for Starting and Ending a Fire | SERVPRO® of Northeast Charlotte

1/31/2022 (Permalink)

A small paper house burning If your home or business has any damage, SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte is ready around the clock to help you recover.

Have you heard of a tetrahedron? Don’t worry, we will share our answer with you! It’s a three-dimensional, triangular shape with four equal sides.

This discussion about the tetrahedron relates to fire safety, believe it or not. In fact, there is something called a fire tetrahedron, which relates to the four major components a fire needs in order to survive! Read on to learn more.

<h34-things-a-fire-needs-to-live">The 4 Things a Fire Needs to Live

Fuel. Fuel is clearly what will make something go, and fires need this in order to keep roaring! Things that can easily be burned, like wood, plastic or organic materials, will continually feed a fire with the fuel it needs.

Heat. A fire require heat in order to get it going and keep going. Once something has been exposed to heat, it will eventually ignite or melt, producing more fuel for a fire.

Oxygen. Oxygen is needed by every living thing, and a fire is no exception to the rule. Oxygen provokes an expanding series of chemical reactions, which can generate products of combustion in the process.

Chemical Chain Reaction. A chain reaction resulting from the three items mentioned above is what will continue to feed a fire. So long as the chain reaction isn’t disturbed, a fire will continue to burn.

<h34-ways-to-stop-a-fire">The 4 Ways to Stop a Fire

Cool it. The most common way to stop a fire is to cool it, or exhaust the heat! This is usually accomplished by dousing the fire in water. But remember that because of the heat, the water is likely to evaporate or even boil, so it will take a lot of water to put a fire out.

Smother it. Sometimes a fire can’t be put out with water alone; it will need to be smothered! Removing all oxygen will eventually put the fire out, because you are starving it from the oxygen it needs. This is the mechanism behind the popular “stop, drop and roll” mantra we’re taught as kids.

Starve it. Something has to keep feeding a fire, so therefore logically speaking, the best thing you can do is starve a fire. Remove any fueling agents like wood and grass in order to help the fire come to a natural end.

Interrupt the chain reaction. Another guaranteed success is to interrupt the chain reaction, and you can do this by using chemical agents like halon. While these agents are effective, halon also has an elevated potential for ozone depletion, meaning it is an environmental threat and has been banned.

If the fire tetrahedron makes a wreck of your home or business, we’re ready around the clock to help you recover. Contact SERVPRO anytime for fast, thorough cleanup and recovery after a fire.

Restoration Can’t Wait | SERVPRO® of Northeast Charlotte

1/28/2022 (Permalink)

< img src =”fire.jpg” alt = “a small interior room showing extensive damage from a recent fire" > If a fire issue pops up during the holidays, remember the trusted leader in the recovery industry, SERVPRO of Northeast Charlotte.

Picture this: It’s Friday evening, your best friend is over for a sleepover, pizza was just delivered and you’re anxiously awaiting TGIF to start. We’re talking two solid hours of your favorite shows. Life is good!

But these days, you don’t have to wait for Friday night to watch your favorite shows. Life is all about instant gratification. You can watch what you want, when you want.

While there are still some times in life when we have to wait, there are some instances where you not only don’t want to wait—you simply can’t. That’s the case when disasters or accidents strike your home or business, leaving you in a desperate situation.

And here at SERVPRO, we understand that to the fullest. That’s why we’re here 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so that we can help you during your darkest hour.

After a fire. While the flames of a fire can cause major damage to a structure, the truth is there are other aspects to consider.

Flames may burn up your possessions or the building structure, but even if they don’t, soot or smoke can not only cover your home from floor to ceiling, but also absorb into the walls of the home. That leaves behind residue and odor that’s difficult to remove.

Follow These Steps for Winter Prep in Milder Climates | SERVPRO® of North Central Mecklenburg County

1/28/2022 (Permalink)

img src =”window.jpg” alt = "a close-up image of a wiper blade wiping away condensation on a car windshield” > If winter weather should bring damage to your home or business, contact SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County for fast, restorative solutions.

This time of year brings thoughts of the fall color season and prep work starts for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. But it’s always a little strange when the radio starts playing “White Christmas” and our favorite TV stations start advertising winter clothing.

The wintertime weather in Charlotte simply doesn’t fit that idyllic holiday narrative! While we do experience all four seasons and occasionally receive snow, it’s a rare occurrence. We usually don’t need snow tires or salt trucks, and frozen pipes are a concern but not a constant worry.

Even though we don’t receive significant snowfall, we do experience cold temperatures in the winter. And we should still perform preventative maintenance on some items. Let’s take a look.

Maintain and service your HVAC system. Obviously, we will need to use the heat in the wintertime, so you’ll want to know it’s working well and operating safely. It’s a great idea to have a professional come out and perform routine maintenance, replacing any parts that could leave you in the cold.

Prepare the home for winter weather. We average around three inches of rain per month over the winter, making it one of the dryer portions of the year. It’s a good time to inspect and repair the roof system. Check for broken or warped shingles, and replace as necessary. Check, clean and empty your gutters as well, to keep anything from damming up the works and sending water streaming into your home. While you’re at it, inspect and clean out your chimney if you burn any wood or coal.

Reseal doors and windows to eliminate drafts. Air infiltration can make you uncomfortable, so consider adding insulation to your attic and sealing your windows. This can make an impact on the comfort level in your home, not to mention the effect it can have on your utility bills.

Winterize your vehicles. Finally, check your car’s tires and windshield wipers. If you have excessive wear, you may want to consider replacing them. You may not have to deal with driving on snow and ice, but there’s a good chance you’ll end up driving in the rain—and you want to be sure you can do it safely.

If winter weather or unexpected flooding causes water to damage your home, we’re always here to help. Contact SERVPRO to see how quick and easy it is to let the pros handle your cleanup and recovery.

The Leading Causes of House Fires | SERVPRO® of North Central Mecklenburg County

img src =”firefighter.jpg” alt = "a firefighter battling a fire with a water hose in hand” > Regardless of the cause, SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County is here for you if your home is affected by fire.

Any fire is dangerous, but a fire in your home is a menacing thought. Your family lives there, and fires are unpredictable. Fires spread quickly and cause a lot of devastation and disruption.

Obviously, we go to great lengths to avoid fires, and we have made some headway. Home fires have been reduced by 55% over the last 40 years.

However, despite this decrease, there are still too many fires happening in homes. Unfortunately, even with all of the ad campaigns to raise awareness, more than 25% of all reported fires still occur in homes.

Let’s take a look at the top causes of house fires, and see if we can get that number down by learning how we can prevent them:

Cooking. This is the No. 1 cause of home fires and injuries. Almost half of all home fires are initiated from unattended cooking! The one thing you can do to avoid a fire at home is to never leave your cooking unattended. Stay with the grill, stove and oven, or turn them off if you leave the room.

Heating equipment. These fires account for 14% of the total number of house fires, and they are caused by improper use, equipment malfunction or flammable materials being placed too close to space heaters.

Electrical fires. Overloading of circuits, faulty wiring and the generally higher usage of electricity in older homes are all components that contribute to electrical fires in homes. And still yet another top cause is the use of frayed or faulty outlets, appliance cords or extensions.

Intentional fires. It’s hard to fathom that 28,000 intentional home fires are started every year. When we say intentional, we mean arson! These are fires that are solely caused by someone setting them to destroy, not fires set for other purposes that get out of control.

Smoking materials. Even though smoking materials are only responsible for 5% of home fire occurrences, they are the leading cause of civilian fire deaths. Often, as cigarettes are left burning, people fall asleep, which makes the victims more susceptible.

Regardless of the cause, SERVPRO is here for you if your home is affected by fire. Contact your local team today to see how we can help.

Autumn Brings Increased Fire Risk | SERVPRO® of North Central Mecklenburg County

img src =”fire.jpg” alt = "a small campfire burning bright in the dark night ” > Be mindful about fall fire safety. Always remember that SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County is the trusted leader in the restoration industry.

Those of us in North Carolina are no strangers to the heat of summer! By the time September rolls around, we’re ready for a bit of relief.

Now the air is getting crisper, the humidity is dropping and sooner than later, in the mornings and evenings, you may even want a light jacket.

Fall is almost here! A favorite season for campers, leaf-peepers and of course trick-or-treaters. Fall weather is perfect for many fun outdoor activities.

But each seasonal change brings with it new fire hazards. So grab a pumpkin spice latte, and let’s review a few fire safety tips for this autumn season.

Outdoor Fires and Campfires

Building a campfire is part art and part science. Knowing how to assemble the proper amount of tinder, twigs and sticks and stacking them in a manner that will combust is the art. The science is providing dry fuel in the right sizes and amounts that are small enough to catch fire.

It’s best to use a long reach lighter or wooden matches when starting a campfire. Never use an accelerant like kerosene or lighter fluid, and make sure to build your fire away from structures and other flammable items.

Before leaving your campsite, make sure to extinguish your fire completely. Slowly drown out the fire and embers until there is no smoke remaining. Anything you leave behind can start up again with the right breeze.

Leaf Burning

Dried leaves will start accumulating in your yard soon, and many people like to burn them as a method of disposal.

However, in Mecklenburg County, open burning is prohibited. You will have to find an alternative form of disposal to get rid of leaves and yard debris.

Space Heaters

Portable space heaters are a frequent cause of fires in the fall and winter. If you’re going to use one, do it safely.

Always keep flammable items away from the heater. All space heater should be equipped with an automatic shut off in case the unit overheats for tips over. If your space heater doesn’t have one, buy a new one that does.

Make sure to place the heater on a level surface and keep kids away from the area of the heater. Plug it directly into an outlet and avoid using an extension cord. Turn it off if you leave the room or go to bed.

Halloween

Next month, goblins and spooks will abound on the 31st!

Keep in mind, Halloween decorations and even costumes can be fire hazards. These things are everywhere during the spooky season, so be attentive and responsible as you celebrate.

If a fire hazard should turn from potential to reality in your home, remember the trusted leader in the recovery industry and contact SERVPRO to get your property fully restored right down to the smell of smoke.

Common Places Water Can Leak in Your Home | SERVPRO® of North East Charlotte County

a leak in ceiling creating water lines running down an interior wall A water leak can turn into a big problem. Contact the SERVPRO of North East Charlotte County team if you are dealing with any water damage

The last thing you want to hear in the morning is, “we have a water leak!” While we need water to survive, we need it to stay in the right places.

Knowing the different places where water can enter your home and how water gets into placed it isn’t supposed to is important. Here are some common sources of water damage in the home.

The bathroom. There are plenty of places in the bathroom for leaks to occur as there are plenty of supply lines and drains in showers and tubs, toilets, and sinks.

Dishwasher supply line and drain. Dishwashers have a supply line, drain and a tub that holds water. So there are multiple opportunities for leaks to occur.

Cracked flashing or vent boots. Cracked flashing and vent boots are another cause for concern. Flashing can degrade over time and should be inspected annually. Vent boots are made from a thick silicone material and should last about 30 years, maybe more depending on the climate in your area.

Outside piping. Every house has a supply pipe coming in and a drain pipe going out, and those pipes are both susceptible to breaking. In colder climates, these pipes have to be buried deep underground so as not to freeze. Many times, outside piping can be covered by a separate insurance plan so homeowners don’t have to be concerned with the a major repair.

Drain problems. Drains can clog for any number of reasons. Three of the most common are grease/food in the kitchen, hair in the shower and a toilet obstruction. If you can keep these three issues under control, the potential for drain issues will be reduced.

It’s smart to stay on top of the home systems that keep water from infiltrating your home. All of these systems have a shelf life, and replacing or repairing them prior to failure can save you a lot of time, money and stress.

If a water leak erupts into a big problem at home, you’ve got the best team in the business on your side. Contact SERVPRO today so we can get started.

a large lightning strike in a dark stormy sky If storms cause damage to your home or business, SERVPRO of North East Charlotte County is on the line, ready to make things right.

Summer is here, and it brings with it many of the things we love. Vacations that have been postponed have been taken, high temperatures are encouraging us to go to the pool or lake, and the days are long and full of sunshine. At least, most of the time!

If you think we experience more storms in the summer, you would be right. Conditions in Charlotte are ripe for summertime storms since all you need is a little moisture and warm air.

In Charlotte, the summers are hot and muggy and the winters are cold and wet. We have our share of severe weather in the form of tornadoes and thunderstorms.

Be Aware During the Summer Storm Season

Though storms happen with more frequency in the summer, it doesn’t mean you need to take them less seriously. Always pay attention to storm alerts, and consider postponing or canceling outdoor activities when storms are forecasted.

Local weather forecasts are more accurate than national forecasts, in general. Consider purchasing an NOAA Weather radio to receive updates in case of a power outage.

Plan on staying home and off the roads if flooding is a possibility.

High winds can break tree limbs and send outdoor furniture flying. Consider removing dead branches and trimming low-hanging branches close to your home as a precaution. Store outdoor furniture indoors or secure it in a safe place outside.

People die every year in storm-related incidents. Caution is the rule of the day.

Be Storm-Safe

Lightning is another hazard associated with summertime storms. Stay inside during lightning and wait for 30 minutes to pass without hearing thunder before going outside. Lightning has been known to strike up to 10 miles away from a rain storms.

Consider unplugging sensitive electronics, and never shower or bath during a thunderstorm.

Have an emergency kit prepared, and know the evacuation route for your area.

Stay at home during floods. However, if you are already out and flooding occurs, stay on high ground and avoid flood waters if possible. Attempting to walk or drive through flood waters is extremely dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.

There are any number of dangers that can come into play in a thunderstorm, and it’s always best to be cautious and put things on hold until storms safely pass. If storms cause damage to your home or business, SERVPRO is on the line, ready to make things right again.

Storm Damages Have Been Increasing Over the Last Decade | SERVPRO® of North East Charlotte County

With a good bit of news coverage last year dedicated to the COVID-19 pandemic, you may have missed an important piece of news. Last year was a year filled with weather-related disasters.

Financial losses due to inclement weather set records again in 2020. According to data from the Nation Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, storms last year created the largest financial loss that the Unites States has ever recorded.

Weather disasters have been increasing steadily over the past decade and hit a fever pitch last year. The technical definition of a weather disaster means the storm or weather event generated at least $1 billion in damage.

In 2020, we had 22 of these. And this doesn’t include the literal thousands of storms that didn’t meet the billion dollar threshold. For the first time since 2005, the NWS had to reach into the Greek alphabet to name storms.

Storms Are Outpacing Hurricanes for Inflicted Financial Damage

Hurricanes create an immense amount of destruction. The size of the storm is so large it’s easy to believe hurricanes are responsible for the majority of financial damage, but they are not.

While hurricanes may be larger, they can’t approach the sheer quantity of thunderstorms. Fourteen out of the official 22 disasters last year were severe thunderstorms.

Consider this example of an impactful storm: Last August, Nebraska experienced a derecho. The NWS defines a derecho as a band of storms that last at least six hours and covers 250 miles, with at least 60 mph sustained winds along the entire span of the front. During this derecho, Nebraska lost over half of its corn crop and 11% of US corn production was impacted.

The Decade of Weather Change

Last year was the tenth consecutive year of recording at least eight billion-dollar weather-related events. In 2017, as one example, severe storms generated over $300 billion in property damage, the highest recorded.

Storm preparation is more important than ever before. Everyone can benefit from taking the proper precautions when storms are coming.

No matter what precautions you take, though, sometimes property damage is going to happen. Our goal is to help you recover when it does. We can help restore your property “Like it never even happened.”

Do you have storm damage? We’re here to help you restore your property. Call us today to see how the experts at SERVPRO can help.

Keep Fires at Bay in the Warmer Months | SERVPRO® of North East Charlotte County

1/28/2022 (Permalink)

flames and smoke from a bonfire Restoring fire and smoke damage is one of our specialties.

Looking forward to summertime is welcome event after the long cold months of winter. Spring is in full bloom, and summer is right around the corner.

It’s a time of renewal and getting outdoors. There are plenty of activities to do outdoors such as hiking, going to the lake, grilling and barbecuing with friends and family, just to name a few.

With the warmer weather families will begin to gather for reunions, graduations and the seasonal cookouts that everyone loves. That also brings with it the risk of increased fires.

Unfortunately, spring sees more daily fires on average than any other time of year. But by being cautious, you can minimize fires at home this season.

Here are some great places to start:

The grill. By and large, the grill is one of the biggest culprits of spring fires. It presents a substantial risk due to the combination of flame, grease, heat and gas. But just taking a few precautions can greatly reduce the risk of a fire on the barbecue grill! Make sure the grill is cleaned prior to every use and that all parts are in proper working order. Replace any worn or damaged components before grilling and keep the grill at least six feet away from any flammable objects, especially the house! Lack of proper cleaning is responsible for almost 20% of grill fires!

The fire pit. While the grill get its share of blame for accidental fires, the fire pit can be dangerous as well. Gathering on a cool spring or summer evening around a fire pit can provide some of the best rest and relaxation after a long day or week. Keep these safety tips in mind: Kids should never be left alone around a fire pit. Keep a bucket of water close by. Don’t add pine needles or leaves to a fire pit as this can cause “flare-ups” and embers can be carried away by the wind. If you are cooking hot dogs or roasting marshmallows do it over the embers and not the open flame, which will help avoid the flame damage and help you get that elusive perfect roasted finish that you’re looking for.

Chimneys and dryer vents. Chimneys should be inspected and cleaned by a professional at least once every season. Ash, soot and creosote buildup is a major cause of fires, and with proper maintenance, this risk can be reduced. The failure to clean dryer vents is a leading cause of fires that emanate from the dryer.

Our technicians are on hand 247 for emergencies. If you encounter fire damage at your home or business, no matter the cause, we will be there faster and have it cleaned up sooner. Call or click today and experience the SERVPRO difference.

What Conditions Does Mold Grow In?

Do I Have Mold? Image of mold spores. Is Mold Growing In Your Home?

What Conditions Does Mold Grow In? | SERVPRO® of North Central Mecklenburg County If you have not considered the possibility of mold becoming a problem in your home, it would be a smart idea to think through how it could impact your household. While mold is a preventable problem, if it does break out, it can be a serious issue to tackle for homeowners, and if it is not handled properly from the beginning, it can quickly return on a repeat basis.

Fortunately, there are things that every homeowner can do to prevent mold from growing in the first place—namely, by avoiding creating conditions where it is likely to thrive. Below, we will take a look at how mold finds its way into your home as well as the conditions that it likes so you can be on the lookout for susceptible places in your home.

How Does Mold Get Into a Home?

Mold spores are airborne, and they can easily be transported from the outdoors to the inside of a home when the door is opened, when people walk inside with their shoes on or when pets and people carry the spores in on their fur or clothes.

Mold is nearly everywhere, which is normally not an issue because it needs a very specific set of conditions to begin to grow and reproduce.

The Conditions That Mold Finds Favorable

There are many different types of mold that may grow in areas, but they all have one thing in common: They cannot grow without an adequate amount of moisture.

Mold requires dampness to take hold and begin reproducing, which is why it is often found in basements, bathrooms and areas that have experienced water damage.

How Can I Discourage Mold From Growing?

One of the best things that homeowners can do to prevent mold from growing is increasing circulation and not letting areas in the home become too humid. Adding a fan to a bathroom or installing a dehumidifier in a basement can go a long way in discouraging mold from making itself at home.

Additionally, if you have any water damage to your home, it is best to get it professionally restored right away so mold does not begin to grow in the damaged area.

Can You Smell Mold Can You Smell Mold

Can You Smell Mold? | SERVPRO® of North Central Mecklenburg County

If you are concerned that you may have mold in your home or are just wanting to be extra vigilant about looking for the signs of it, it is important that you are aware of what to watch out for that might indicate that you have a mold problem on your hands.

Mold can be a tricky thing to deal with, but if you can catch it quickly, it can be far less complicated to handle.

What Is Mold?

Mold is an airborne fungus whose organisms are almost always present in the air. In natural settings, mold is responsible for the important role of breaking down decaying matter, and due to its airborne nature, it is able to travel quickly from place to place.

Most of us are likely exposed to mold every time we step outside, but in low concentrations. It is only when mold becomes concentrated in an area of the home that it can become dangerous.

When mold becomes concentrated, it can begin to infiltrate the air in your home and cause health effects. Some people have a mold allergy, which makes them extra susceptible to its effects, but even in otherwise healthy people, mold can cause health effects.

Will I Be Able to Smell Mold?

Oftentimes, a dank, musty odor is the first sign that homeowners have something amiss in regards to mold in the home. Many people are surprised to realize that mold can begin growing in as little as 24 hours, so if you catch a whiff of something odd, it is best to investigate quickly.

The smell that mold creates is pungent, and often described as “stale,” “damp” or “rotten.” Because the smell comes directly from the mold, opening the windows or increasing circulation is of no use, though it may temporarily improve the conditions.

What Should I Do if I Suspect Mold?

If you suspect that your home has a problem with mold, whether due to the smell or some other reason, it is important to act quickly. Mold remediation is the only option for dealing with a mold infestation—bleaching it or cleaning it will only be a temporary solution as more mold can continue to grow. If you think you have mold, it is important to call in an expert mold remediation team right away.

Leaking Basements Basement Water Leaks

Do You Know the Signs of Basement Water Damage? | SERVPRO® of North Central Mecklenburg County

A basement is an essential part of many homes. It can serve as a place to store boxes of collections and memories.

It can be a place for the family to huddle when storms are near. It can even be extra living space for an adult child or an in-law who need a temporary place to call home.

However, homeowners typically run into one major problem above all others as it regards basements: water damage. Because basements are dug into the ground, and because appliances such as water heaters are often stored there, a basement becomes a prime place for unaccounted-for water to end up.

It’s not a guarantee that you’ll encounter water damage in the basement, but if your home has one built in, it definitely behooves you to be aware of the risks and acquaint yourself with the common roots and signs of aquatic basement misadventures.

The Top Signs of Water Damage in a Basement

Unpleasant, musky odors. Whether it’s from outdoor moisture or indoor leakage, the water that comes into your basement will find a place to settle, soak and sour, eventually resulting in the smell that’s so often associated with basement life that some people just assume it’s issued with the house. That smell, though, should not be the norm for your underground room. It only occurs when mold and mildew are present in the environment, and your sense of smell is your first clue that you’ve got mold growing, as the odor will manifest even before mold or mildew are visible.

Flaking paint on masonry or walls. If your downstairs haven is painted, a disruption in the paint job could very well signal that you have a water issue. Even so-called waterproof paint won’t hold back a significant enough leak—it’ll just give way later, after more water has accumulated. Yes, if there’s bubbling and flaking, you’ve got water. Unless, that is, you’ve got…

Foundational cracks. Homes have been known to shift over time, but full-blown cracks in the foundation aren’t normal, and they must be acted upon immediately. Cracks can also manifest in the floor, the ceiling or in your walls, as a sign that your foundation has already cracked and the rest of the house is feeling the pressure. Don’t fret over hairline cracks, but if they grow, you need to line up repair options quick.

If you notice any of these signs in your basement, let us take a look. Our expert water restoration technicians can help you determine what is causing these issues and how to treat it properly. Contact us today to learn more.

What Factors Can Make Drying More Efficient in My Charlotte Home?

6/11/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO has the tools to restore your water damaged home. Call us today!

Our SERVPRO Team has Powerful Tools and Equipment to Manage Specific Facets of the Drying Sciences to Restore Your Water-Damaged Property

Drying your Charlotte home is often more complicated than addressing surface water alone. While many property owners consider water restoration to be little more than sopping up pooling water on the floor of your house, there are often several more steps then mopping and towel drying. With as fast as water can migrate throughout the property, structural cavities and expose materials often absorb a portion of the damage, requiring more complex and involved drying solutions.

With experienced technicians on our roster with water restoration accreditations through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), we have professionals available to restore water damage in Charlotte's homes at any time of the day. Part of the experience of these professionals and their extensive training involves understanding the three primary elements of drying. These main branches of drying science include:

  • Humidity
  • Temperature
  • Airflow

How Can You Regulate Humidity?

Higher humidity levels can slow the drying process, ultimately keep customers from their homes longer and make water damage restoration cost more money. Desiccant dehumidifiers can pull moisture from the environment and replace it with a dryer exhausted air from the unit.

What Temperature is Best for Drying?

Warmth is always a desirable factor when it comes to drying construction materials and contents in a water damaged home. To achieve this, our professionals utilized portable electric heaters within the drying zone to increase the temperature and its evaporative properties.

What Tools Work Best for Moving Air Through a Drying Zone?

Airflow is an essential factor when it comes to drying out more substantial areas of the structure. After establishing a drying zone, tools like air movers can force heated air throughout this affected region to expedite evaporation.

What Precautions Should I Take When Cleaning Fire Damaged Surfaces?

Call our experts after you experience a fire disaster, we have training in fire & smoke restoration, odor control, upholstery & fabric cleaning.

Engaging SERVPRO Fire and Smoke Restoration Technicians Eliminates the Headache of Making Choices during Fire Damage Restoration in Mecklenburg County

It is common for fires in Mecklenburg County to leave surfaces such as floors, walls, and ceilings covered in soils such as soot, tar, and other residues. The water or other chemicals used to quell the flames also cause some form of soiling. The most inexpensive way to deal with the soiling is by cleaning since refinishing or resurfacing is more expensive. Despite its usefulness, cleaning can cause problems if not done correctly.

Can I clean unsealed wood after fire damage incidents in Mecklenburg County?

Although unsealed wood is not likely to be a predominant material in many items or surfaces in your house, there are a few pieces somewhere within the structure such as:

  • Cabinet interiors
  • Structural supports
  • Paneling

Cleaning residues or soils from surfaces with unsealed wood can present some unique challenges. For instance, raw wood absorbs and holds most solutions, so it is easy to stain the surface permanently while trying to clean it up. If the surface is only soiled lightly, the best approach is to clean it without using solutions. For example, wiping with Dry Cleaning Sponges helps. Wet cleaning is essential in case of heavy soiling. To negate the possibility of driving residues deep into the material, our SERVPRO technicians use denatured alcohol to facilitate safe wet cleaning.

Do plastered surfaces present any cleaning challenges?

Plaster is a common material used in walls or ceilings, which also happen to be the common areas where smoke residues collect during fires. The accumulation of residues occurs because the increase in temperatures inside the building also increases air pressure, thus forcing smoke against the surfaces where it deposits residues.

Since there are different variations of plaster, the cleaning challenges you face might depend on what type you have on the surfaces that you intend to clean. Common types of plaster include:

  • Stipple plaster
  • Sprayed-on acoustic plaster
  • Swirled textures

Wet cleaning such areas is not a good idea since water-based cleaning products are likely to dissolve the material. Sprayed-on acoustic plaster is the most vulnerable and the slightest contact can chip it off. Our technicians use distinct approaches to clean such areas without causing unnecessary damages. For example, we can use a vacuum to remove soot from the plastered surface.  We use the nozzle attachment and hold it around one inch away from the wall when cleaning to eliminate the chances of smearing.

How hard is it to clean masonry?

Despite your best effort, you might not manage to remove all residues from masonry surfaces. This might sound unusual considering the surfaces are resilient, thus enabling the use of many cleaning approaches and products.

Masonry refers to many products, including:

  • Marble
  • Slate
  • Cinder block
  • Concrete

The main problem with masonry materials is their porous nature that allows residues to penetrate beyond the surface and odor retention. However, if the material has a sealer coat applied before the fire, it eliminates the challenge. Sealers are more common in floors than walls. Our SERVPRO technicians inspect the level of soiling in masonry surfaces and perform some tests to determine which method is likely to bear fruit. Some of the common methods we use include:

  • Wet cleaning with alkaline cleaners
  • Wet cleaning with a strong acid
  • Abrasion blasting
  • Dry cleaning

Why is it necessary to test before cleaning masonry surfaces?

The porous nature of masonry that allows penetration of residues also allows the absorption of cleaning solutions. Sometimes, the cleaning product reacts with the material reading to color change. Therefore, you might end up with stains, even when cleaning is successful.  Pre-testing a cleaning solution in an inconspicuous section of the soiled surface helps reveal the color changes before you clean all areas.

When using alkaline cleaners, our SERVPRO technicians consider the level of soiling to determine the concentration levels. We apply the solution generously with a bucket or pump up sprayer to ensure the surface remains wet during dwell-time.  Agitation is also necessary, so we brush or scrub the area thoroughly before rinsing off the cleaning solution. For proper rinsing, we prefer hosing the area or using a pressure washer. With masonry, the true effects of the cleaning process are only apparent once the area dries fully. Our technicians help quicken drying by setting up air movers to improve air movements.

Taking precautions helps improve the outcome when restoring fire damage. You can be confident you are taking the right approaches by involving an experienced teat like SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County. Call us at (704) 596-9700 to help make any loss, "Like it never even happened."

How Do I Get the Water Out of My Mecklenburg County Basement Without a Sump Pump?

4/25/2020 (Permalink)

We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster!

SERVPRO has the equipment and expertise to clean and dry your Mecklenburg County basement

Statistics show that a full 98% of basements have a water loss event at least once during their service life in a residence. A finished basement has the potential to have more structural loss due to the installed walls and flooring that may be present.

What Types of Damage Can Happen if Water Cleanup in My Basement Gets Delayed?
When a Mecklenburg County basement needs water cleanup, several steps need to occur for the best outcome. In finished basements, there can be substantial losses from water wicked into sheetrock; tiles can come loose, and glue-down carpet may be ruined. The potential for restoration depends on the construction materials used in the flooring and how long it had exposure to high moisture conditions.

In some cases, the water removal efforts did not occur because the homeowner had no idea there was an issue. A slow leak in a basement that no one goes into very often is a recipe for problems such as mold infestations and damp, musty odors.

Types of Water Loss Situations in Commonly Seen in Basements
When SERVPRO handles water removal and restoration services in local basements, here are some of the typical reasons why it occurred:

    •    Sewage backup in a basement bathroom
    •    Plumbing issue such as a pipe break
    •    Supply line leak to a washing machine
    •    Water heater tank failure
    •    Groundwater or flash flood

Proactive Tactics for Lessening Contents Loss
SERVPRO technicians move items in the basement away from the water. As they do so, they inspect each thing to see if it needs cleaning or has any damage from water exposure. Contents moved may be taken to another area of the home, stored on-site, or taken to a secure location off-site. Anytime possessions get moved, the technicians make a detailed report that includes photos, location, and in the case of a large number of objects, barcodes may get used. Because the placement location within the basement gets noted, when it is time to move items back in, putting them in their precise location is not an issue.

Tactics for Damaged Building Materials

    •    Numerous actions need to occur to mitigation mitigate the loss to walls and floors in a finished basement.
    •    Flood cuts on sheetrock that wicked water
    •    Removal of floating floors or tiles to dry the substrate underneath
    •    A glue-down carpet usually needs replacement and on a case by case basis inspected for reinstallation.
    •    Removal of installed electronics such as mounted flatscreen televisions and soundbars

The Right Equipment Makes the Difference in the Outcome
In the cases where the basement has water due to a malfunctioning sump pump or poor drainage, the technicians can remove the water rapidly by deploying multiple portable pumps. These allow the technicians to move freely and extract the water. It is common for the same spot to get worked on until the passes are "dry" with no apparent moisture coming up. This practice assists in expediting the drying phase of mitigation.

After the extraction equipment, the technologically advanced drying equipment is one of the most significant differences between DIY and professional equipment. Very few basements have good ventilation besides the egress windows and doors to reduce the trapped water vapor. The air movers used by SERVPRO for drying push warm, dry air over wet surfaces at high speeds; it causes embedded moisture to rise. In a basement, this could be problematic without dehumidification equipment at the ready to capture it and port it away.

Special Considerations for Masonry and Concrete
Because of the porous nature of concrete and brick, when the moisture rises to the surface and dries, it can leave a white powdery substance known as efflorescence. It is the residues left behind by salts and minerals in the brick or concrete and gets wiped away easily.

Odor Control Actions Before Repairs
There is no point in making repairs in a basement if residual musty water odors remain behind. SERVPRO techs have different applications to ensure that before any reinstallation or repairs happen, the basement is odor-free. Cleaning the masonry and slab floor with specific cleaning agents assists with removing any stains as well as modernization. If the scent-level requires stronger treatments, thermal fogging works well to neutralize both airborne and embedded odorous particulate that may still be present.

When your home needs water cleanup, you need help sooner rather than later. Call SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County at (704) 596-9700; the certified technicians are available 24/7 to provide compassionate, professional solutions for your home disaster.

Contact SERVPRO for fire damage mitigation. We are always available to help you.

Our Experiences Technicians at SERVPRO Know Exactly What to do After a Fire

Fire damage of any size should have professional mitigation. The main reason is even small amounts of soot can spread. Not only is it unhealthy to breathe and a potential skin irritant, but the particulate can also result in pungent odors throughout the home.

When SERVPRO handles fire damage in Charlotte homes, special care goes into saving homeowners the cost of replacing items. In many cases, contents without charring but smoke damage have restoration potential.

Before the technicians arrive on-site, there are numerous actions that homeowners can take to assist in limiting the loss to their structure and contents.

  • Talk to the fire department and ascertain if it is safe to remain in the home.
  • Avoid the fire loss area and limit movement within the home; if you choose to remain in the house, this helps avoid driving soot particles into upholstery and carpet.
  • Do not attempt to clean any of the smoke damage, using improper solutions and methods can drive soot deeper into surfaces and cause permanent damage.
  • Use clean towels or linens on rugs, carpet traffic areas, and upholstered furnishings.
  • If the electricity is nonfunctional, and fire loss affected the kitchen, empty the refrigerator and prop the doors open as it will require cleaning.
  • Chrome handles and knobs get protected from the caustic soot through an application of petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Remove houseplants outdoors and wash both sides of the leaves.
  • Ensure the HVAC is off.

We Get You Back In Business In Mecklenburg County After A Flood

3/1/2020 (Permalink)

Our technicians have the state of the art equipment necessary to handle restoring your office building's flood damage right away.

Commercial Flood Damage Brings Mud to Mecklenburg County Office

It is no secret that commercial flood damage hits local businesses hard. Just the loss of revenue during cleanup can take a toll along with the hardship on employees who suddenly do not have a job to go to until the restoration process completes.

When SERVPRO works on commercial flood damage restoration jobs in Mecklenburg County, their goal is to save the business from having to replace as many items as possible and get the company reopened in the shortest amount of time.

Scoping the Loss Area

In a local office, the water was not the most significant issue when groundwater entered a small building. The water soaked the carpet in the reception area and ran down the hallway. SERVPRO technicians found the water receded before going very far into the offices. However, a large amount of mud got left behind, coating the floor.

Extraction and Removal of Loss Items

The glue-down carpet was a loss due to both the delamination and contamination from groundwater. SERVPRO techs extracted the flood damage water to make the carpet lighter to handle and safer to lift for disposal. The baseboards also required removal, and the sheetrock required flood cuts roughly twelve-inches above the floor joints to open up the wall cavities for drying. The use of trash pumps pulled up the thick layer of mud along with the water quickly.

Multi-Layered Drying Methods

SERVPRO techs know that concrete absorbs moisture and requires the power of air movers to release the embedded moisture. This action negates secondary issues such as foul odors or the potential for mold growth. The Injecti-Dry system is beneficial for forcing air into the wall cavities and assists with lowering the interior moisture to expedite the drying process.

Final Wipe Down and Prepping for Repairs

Once the interior confirmed as dry, the techs used their antimicrobial cleaning agents to wipe down the surfaces affected by water loss to leave it sanitized and ready for the replacement of the carpet, baseboards, and sheetrock repairs necessary to get the office reopened.

SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County at (704) 596-9700 stands ready to assist local properties with commercial flood damage cleanup and restoration to make the loss "Like it never even happened."

Fire Damage In Your Charlotte Home

We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Restoring Porch and Attic Fire Damage in a Charlotte Home

A fire that started on the porch of a house in Charlotte spread to the attic before the fire department controlled it. The homeowner was glad that the fire did not consume the entire property, but there was still the issue of damages to address. The arrival of SERVPRO green trucks was the first sign of reassurance.

The fire damage in the Charlotte home affected some of the exterior and interior areas since it started on the porch before spreading through the wall materials to interior areas.  Various challenges were apparent immediately we arrived at the site. For example, although many of the affected building materials could be salvaged, processes such as cleaning would be challenging because of the unfinished nature of their surfaces. It is harder to remove residues from rough surfaces, and the open pores allow deeper penetration of residues, complicating deodorization. Our SERVPRO crew brought a soda blaster to the loss site to help clean such materials.

Away from the building materials, the contents affected by the flames also posed a different kind of challenge because we had to sort them out to determine what was damaged completely, and what could be salvaged. With everything either charred or covered in soot, making the necessary distinctions was not that easy. Our SERVPRO team started the process by doing thorough sorting to establish salvageable, unsalvageable, and questionable items. We also liaised with the homeowner to establish items of value.

Away from the main sections damaged by the flames, other areas in the house required a general cleaning to remove smoke residues and bad odor. We expedited the process by using procedures such as cleaning with chemical sponges, which remove residues from surfaces without leaving smudges. We also mixed water-based deodorizers with the cleaning solutions to take care of deodorization during the cleaning process.

Trashcan fires and other ignitions outside the house can cause severe fire damage. Call SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County at (704) 596-9700 to help you deal with such damage. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Equilibrium Sciences for Efficient Drying of Charlotte Homes

You can contact our professionals 24/7. Our experts are trained and equipped with the experience and equipment to handle any water damage task.

Thorough Water Removal in Your Charlotte Home Can Prevent Further Damage

When drying out a damaged Charlotte home after a water loss incident, our technicians must seek to exploit nature’s need for natural balances to maximize drying and water removal. Psychrometry is one of these scientific studies that our water restoration technicians (WRT) become familiar with during their education and field experience recovering water losses. Understanding the pull of present forces to even out, can help experienced technicians increase the output of placed machinery and restoration techniques.

Determining how nature seeks to balance damage before drying and water removal for Charlotte homes can Indicate the best approaches for removing lingering moisture and saturation from construction materials and contents. Our SERVPRO professionals utilize three natural laws of nature to continue the pace and effectiveness of drying tactics. These laws include:

  • High Pressure Goes to Low Pressure
  • Hot Goes to Cold
  • Wet Goes to Dry

These facts also lay out the essential elements of efficient drying, such as temperature, air pressure, and humidity. When two spaces differ in any of these areas, nature seeks to create a balance between the two by working to make both of the damaged regions equal in moisture content, temperature, and pressures. Recognizing the differences as they exist, and before natural equilibrium can get reached, is a productive practice in the hands of our SERVPRO technicians.

Our professionals must work never to allow the house to reach a point where all of these elements, like air pressure, temperature, and saturation level out. When warmer temperatures present in one drying space migrate to colder regions or pressure begins to level out between several damp areas of the home at once, we must continue to modify these results with warm, dry air and focused equipment. Ineffective drying happens when wet areas still exist, but equilibrium has stalled the movement or change of these three primary factors.

Understanding the science of drying can help our SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County team provide effective water removal and drying services to damaged homes. No matter how we can help, give our emergency response team a call 24/7 at (704) 596-9700.

Flooding In Your Charlotte Home

We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster!

Emergency Services to Limit Further Flooding in Charlotte Homes

As home and business owners have seen in recent years, our area can see some of the harshest weather events that can make landfall from the Atlantic. With thousands of businesses and homes in the city and its surrounding neighborhoods, a prompt response after a devastating storm loss situation is vital to protecting your property as much as possible. With years of experience, a combination of our technicians and licensed general contractors can work to provide vital emergency services and mitigation.

Flood damage to Charlotte homes after a damaging storm might be unavoidable, but how severe these effects become hinges on the response of our technicians and the actions they take once we arrive. Our general contractors, for example, are vital to sealing up penetration points to prevent further runoff or newly developing storms from entering the household through vulnerabilities in the roof, siding, or other structural elements.

These same professionals might have to conduct tree removal as well when larger limbs or full trees have fallen into the structure. A direct impact from a massive tree limb or the trunk can collapse a roof or cause substantial structural damage in other ways. This situation can lead to floodwater entering the property unabated. Roof tarping and board up services can reduce direct water flow and wind-driven losses.

Much like our general contractors have vital steps to take when flooding is occurring, our restoration technicians must also get started on recovery as quickly as possible. We arrive with helpful mitigation tools like powerful extractors and pumps to reduce standing water in the affected areas. Once surface water gets addressed, our direct evaporative equipment like air movers can work to address saturated materials to minimize the need for reconstruction in your house.

Reducing the out of pocket expenses for our customers after a flood might mean the way we can navigate the needs of your insurance provider, but also hinges on the fast response and emergency services that we can provide immediately following a storm loss. No matter how we can help, you can reach our SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County team 24/7 at (704) 596-9700.

Mecklenburg County Fire and Soot Mess? What To Do? Call SERVPRO!

When this SERVPRO Service Vehicle Is Parked on Your Mecklenburg County Property--You Know Help for Fire and Smoke Damage Has Arrived!

Approaches for Cleaning Smoke Residues in Mecklenburg County

Beginning with the point of ignition, the effects of a fire loss incident lessen the farther away from this point that you get in a Mecklenburg County home. While concentrations of ash and soot might be the strongest at the origin of the blaze, adjacent rooms and areas to this damaged region can experience a lower buildup of soot and smoke residues. Effective cleaning of these areas begins with the right process to loosen the buildup with mechanical actions.

Because not all fire damage in Mecklenburg County homes is the same or the same level of severity, the process to clean and restore these areas varies multiple times in the same residence. Building an understanding of the best agitative cleaning practices to reduce the severity of buildup on surfaces and contents can maximize the efficiency of our SERVPRO professionals working in the house.

Each level of debris buildup (mild, medium, and heavy) has different techniques, tools, and processes. Mild agitation is ideal for when soiling is not thick and overwhelming. This level of damage would often be in nearby rooms to the origin point of the fire. Breaking up the sediment and residues can make later cleaning practices with foam, wiping, or media blasting methods more effective.

•    Feather Dusting – Hard surfaces can sometimes benefit from feather dusting to loosen or even remove excess residues.
•    Vacuuming – Smoke particles and soot can get vacuumed from surfaces with a HEPA filtered machine. The attachment brush can also help to break up surface residues.
•    Brushes - Paintbrushes can do a lot for a softer removal of set in residues without damaging the underlying material.
•    Compressed Air – Using pressurized air can have a direct effect on the buildup of wastes. This practice is not always the best for our SERVPRO team; however, as it can move loose particles into crevices and areas that are more challenging to reach.

As challenging as fire loss incidents can become, the right cleaning approach can help to protect many of the exposed surfaces. Our SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County team has the equipment and personnel to make fire losses, “Like it never even happened.” Give us a call today at (704) 596-9700.

Water Damage Incident In Your Charlotte Home

1/12/2020 (Permalink)

Controlled demolition helps restorers focus on deeply affected areas while salvaging many materials.

Demolition, not Destruction When Restoring Water Damage Incident in a Charlotte Home

Water intrusion that causes deterioration of materials can be a challenge to address. Away from the physical challenge of restoring or replacing the materials, which a professional team like SERVPRO handles easily, the cost may be higher than what the homeowner, or the insurer, is willing to pay. One way to cater for the interests of all involved parties is through controlled demolition, which helps reach the affected areas without causing unnecessary damages.

During a water damage incident in Charlotte, a leak in the pipes supplying a kitchen sink left water within the construction assembly of the countertop holding it. Due to the passage of time, the water also found a way through the surrounding laminate floor, affecting the fiberboards. For the homeowner, removing the water and restoring the affected materials with minimal damages was the main priority. SERVPRO technicians are well versed with controlled demolition, which helps open up such assemblies for drying and removal of unsalvageable materials.

Among the items, we could save included the Corian countertop, its main assembly parts such as the framing, and side panels. Careful disassembly, including lifting and moving the heavy countertop surface away before focusing on the panels, helped limit the chances of damaging them. Once disassembled, our SERVPRO technicians wet vacuumed the area to remove water remnants before setting up air movers and a dehumidifying unit to complete the drying process.

The way laminate floors are made makes it hard to restore them after a water loss, especially when there is deep moisture penetration. A typical floor has a high-density fiberboard laminated with a vapor retardant at the top and bottom. On scoping the area with moisture meters, we realized the intrusion penetrated some of the boards, necessitating the removal. Luckily, it affected just a small section around the countertop so we could focus on that area saving the homeowner money.

Controlled demolition helps restorers focus on deeply affected areas while salvaging many materials. Call SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County at (704) 596-9700 to help. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Charlotte Flooding Got You Down? SERVPRO Can Lift You Up with Swift and Efficient Restoration Services

Storm Damage Mitigation by SERVPRO for Charlotte Property Owners

Mixed Wintry Precipitation Means Storm Damage in Charlotte

Heavy rains and high winds can share center stage with sleet and snow in Charlotte as we move through the last weeks at the end of the year. When torrential precipitation pounds down with temperatures dipping nearing freezing, your home risks exposure to significant storm devastation. Saturated ground coated with an icy mix accelerates overland flooding and seepage into crawl spaces and foundations as wet moves to the dry construction and space inside your lowest levels.

First We Secure

When storm damage in Charlotte comes lapping up your basement stairs or through a hole smashed through your roof by an ice-covered branch, you need a reliable emergency response. After we assess safety risks such as submerged debris or live electricity, our crew works fast to tarp over or board up breaches in your home’s exterior.

Second We Extract

Floodwaters can rain down from above, flow in from the surface, or ooze through the surrounding ground. A rapid removal of fluids is essential as porous building materials deteriorate quickly, and secondary damage like mold growth can gain hold within a 24 to 48-hour window. SERVPRO's service vehicles contain submersible pumps and both truck-mounted and portable extractors. If the electricity is temporarily unavailable because of the storm, our gas and generator-powered equipment prevents delays in water extraction.

Third We Manage Contamination

Storm damage leads to water damage which nearly always complicates with significant amounts of contaminants. Household, road and landscaping chemicals, infectious wastes, other microbial infestations, and hazards like asbestos and lead can all join the mix. SERVPRO crews are familiar with local hazardous waste containment and disposal mandates, ensuring the dangerous fluids and debris we capture, bag, or otherwise secure are lawfully managed. Our crews clean contaminated surfaces with appropriate products using industry best practice methods. Sanitization with EPA-registered products makes your living spaces safe to inhabit.

Finally We Dry

SERVPRO employees are scientist-like, masters of psychrometry, the theory and application of efficient structural drying. Using a range of moisture detection and metering tools to collect data, we establish drying goals. Air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers each add a drying element. Our technicians evaluate the needs and position the equipment to achieve the right balance for effective drying. Monitoring and adaptations throughout the project eventually deliver a clean, sanitized, and dry home to you and your family.

The trained and well-equipped team at SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County is poised to help your recovery from storm damage. Call us 24/7 at (704) 596-9700. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Each fire job requires a unique solution, we have your answers to restoring at SERVPRO!

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and Soot facts:

  1. Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  2. Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  3. The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke:

There are two different types of smoke- wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenberg County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting.

We at SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenberg County want to help you prepare for Hurricane Season

10/16/2019 (Permalink)

Hurricane Season is here!

-Make sure you have bottled water, a first aid kit, flashlights, a battery-powered radio, non-perishable food items, blankets, clothing, prescription drugs, eyeglasses, personal hygiene supplies, and a small amount of cash or traveler's checks.

- Take proactive steps to protect your property from loss. Install storm shutters or cover windows prior to a hurricane. Be sure there is no loose siding on your home and no damaged or diseased trees growing over your home.

- Take an inventory of your personal property, such as clothes, jewelry, furniture, computers and audio/video equipment. Photos and video of your home, as well as sales receipts and the model and the serial numbers of items, will make filing a claim simpler, leave a copy of your inventory with friends or relatives, email it to yourself, and/or store it in a safe location. In addition, add insurance information to your inventory information- the name of your company and agent, policy number and contact information.

- Move all of your important documents to a safe location. Take them with you when you evacuate or store them in a safe deposit box outside the area.

- Make a plan for your pets. Not all emergency shelters will take pets. Check with your local veterinarian for help with plan.

- Review your insurance coverage. What does your insurance policy cover? What does it exclude? The standard homeowners' insurance policy does not cover flood damage. Check if your policy covers debris removal and sewer back-up.

Above all else, stay safe!

Being that we are local, we have experience in dealing with issues created by leaks, burst pipes, & storms.

Flood Damage and moisture can then create several issues with substances that make up the structural components of your commercial property. Saturated building materials can lose their structural integrity and deteriorate. Also, then if organic substances stay wet for more than 48 hours, fungal growth can occur.

Whenever any H2O enters your home even if it is in the form of snow, it can cause your place of structural business issues. If you ever notice water inside your commercial property, call SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County at (704) 596-9700 24/7.

Summer Time in Charlotte

7/24/2019 (Permalink)

Summer has came along once more and your local SERVPRO of North Mecklenberg County is here to provide some quick tips!

  1. Hydrate in Advance- Try to prepare your body by drinking plenty of fluids beforehand. Of course on those days you will need to stay extra hydrated, but having your body prepared for the amount of sweat it will be giving off is a start to staying cool!
  2. Dress for the heat- Some days we dont remind ourselves that we can stay cooler by simply wearing the right gear. Sun hats, UPF 50 shirts, etc are some of our favorites to keep around for these hot days!
  3. Reduce heat by setting up a misting system-  While this obliviously doesn't cool down the temperature of the air, this does help to keep your skin moistened and cool you down by evaporating. You can make most of these systems for about $15.
  4. Set up a shade Canopy-  For those cookouts, pool parties, or even just social gatherings. The better shade you have from the sun, the more you can enjoy these events comfortably.

- But all in all, have some summer fun! There are so many places around Charlotte to spend with your family to stay cool!

As many of you know working in different job fields the behind the scenes often goes unnoticed. A year and a half ago I- Nichole began working for SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County. Working in the office has always seemed easy to me. For years I worked in higher education, but this has been different. SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County isn't just a "job" to me. Why SERVPRO some might ask? Well, it all starts with community, communication, and customer service. SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County has showed me how important it is to get involved with the customers. Many places of employment people are often simply just a number. The first week on the job it was great to see how personal the office staff and production teams can get. When I say personal NOOOO not being nosey, but just checking on the customers. A simple call, Hello this is Nichole from SERVPRO I just wanted to check on you. We have been doing some work at your home how are things going. Yeah it seems little, but it goes a long way. Not only is customer service and communication a big factor for SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County, but community. I have never worked for a company that the owner loves to support local businesses, schools and all about bettering the area. When someone asks me where I am employed or what makes our franchise different from the rest, I have so many things to share and for that alone I know this is where I am supposed to be.

Lake Norman Residents, are you Hurricane Prepared?

5/3/2019 (Permalink)

We at SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County want to remind residents of Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson, NC that now is the time to start preparing for the upcoming hurricane season.

-Make sure you have bottled water, a first aid kit, flashlights,  a battery-powered radio, non-perishable food items, blankets, clothing, prescription drugs, eyeglasses, personal hygiene supplies, and a small amount of cash or traveler’s checks.

-Take proactive steps to protect your property from loss. Install storm shutters or cover windows prior to a hurricane. Be sure there is no loose siding on your home and no damaged or diseased trees growing over your home.

-Take an inventory of your personal property, such as clothes, jewelry, furniture, computers and audio/video equipment. Photos and video of your home, as well as sales receipts and the model and the serial numbers of items, will make filing a claim simpler, leave a copy of your inventory with friends or relatives, e-mail it to yourself, and/or store it in a safe location. In addition, add insurance information to your inventory information – the name of your company and agent, policy number and contact information.

-Move all of your important documents to a safe location. Take them with you when you evacuate or store them in a safe deposit box outside the area.

-Make a plan for your pets. Not all emergency shelters will take pets. Check with your local veterinarian for help with plan.

-Review your insurance coverage. What does your insurance policy cover? What does it exclude? The standard homeowners’ insurance policy does not cover flood damage. Check if your policy covers debris removal and sewer back-up.

Above all else, stay safe!

Grease Fires and How To Prevent Them

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

This kitchen suffered fire damage from a grease fire in the local Charlotte area.

Grease fires are one of the number one causes of home fires and home injuries. A grease fire can potentially cause you to lose your kitchen, our even your home if they are not dealt with properly. Here are proper ways to deal with a grease fire and ways you can prevent a grease fire.

First off, how does a grease fire start?

- A grease fire can occur when cooking oil becomes too hot and begins to ignite itself. Vegetable oils commonly have a smoking point of 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

I've created a grease fire, what do I do?

  1. DO NOT PUT WATER ON A GREASE FIRE. Some may think the number one way to put out a fire is with water. As that may be correct in some situations, within this situation it is not. The water instead will cause the burning oil to splash which will cause the fire to spread instantly.
  2. Instead of using water, you want to starve the fire of oxygen so grab a metal lid or baking sheet and cover the fire.
  3. Turn off the heat source
  4. If the fire itself is small ,you can pour baking soda or salt to put it out. If you don't have those, you can use a Class B dry chemical fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire.

IF YOU CANNOT EXTINGUISH THE FIRE, EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY AND CALL 911

How do I prevent a grease fire?

  • If you are ever cooking, frying, boiling, or any type of cooking, it is best to stay in the kitchen at all times to keep an eye on everything
  • Keep anything flammable away from your stovetop
  • If you exceed recommended grease temperatures and notice it begin to smoke, turn off the burner and let it cool.
  • Keep a lid near the pan you are cooking in

Remember anytime you are cooking with heat, be smart and be prepared!

Kitchen Fire Spreading Quickly

House fires happen year around. Kitchen fires are number 1 on the list of leading causes of house fires. The kitchen is an area of the house that is used daily, but can be the most dangerous. There are a few safety tips SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County would like to share with you. Next time you are in the kitchen try to do the following:

1) Pull back your hair and roll up your shirt sleeves to keep them away from cooking services

2) Keep children and animals away from cooking surfaces.

3) Use kitchen time so you know when food is done.

4) Check and make sure the stove top and oven are completely off when exiting the kitchen.

5) Keep a lid close by when you are cooking to smother small fires.

6) Keep pot holders, towels, paper towels away from the stove top.

7) When using cooking oil don't leave the kitchen and be very attentive.

These are things we often forget about, but can cause a kitchen fire quickly.

MOLD MOLD MOLD

10/26/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is a fungi and it’s is everywhere in nature. There is mold in the outside air we breathe. The issue with mold indoors is the type of mold that has developed and its concentrations.

When an environment contains the right amount of nutrients, moisture, and oxygen with ideal temperatures, mold growth can occur. Mold thrives between 60-90 degrees Fahrenheit.  Mold enjoys the humidity of Charlotte.

Mold uses cellulose materials as nutrients for its growth. Some forms of cellulose materials that exist in an indoor environment include the following:

  • Drywall
  • Paint
  • Wallpaper
  • Wood Members
  • Insulation
  • Hardwood Flooring
  • Carpet
  • Clothing
  • Food

Mold is typically fuzzy or wooly in texture with colors ranging from black, green and brown to yellow, gray, pink and white.

The type of mold that exists in an indoor environment cannot be determined by the naked eye.

An on-site inspection by a  professional will help develop a proper course of action. We proudly service the Charlotte area as well as the Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson areas. We listen to your concern's, be it young or old family members, pets, or other limiting factors. We are here to help at (704)-596-9700

Mold vs. Health

10/22/2018 (Permalink)

How mold can affect your health?

The effects of mold on individuals varies. Our body is constantly battling various intruders and one of those intruders is mold. While many people have strong immune systems to battle these intrusions, even the healthiest individuals suffer from adverse health effects from mold due to one of the following:

  • Mold Allergies
  • Weak or Undeveloped Immune System
  • Exposure to High Concentrations of Mold
  • Exposure to Toxic Mold

Some indoor molds have the ability to produce mycotoxins, which are toxic byproducts produced during metabolism. Symptoms caused by mycotoxins vary depending on the type, amount, and duration of exposure. Mycotoxicoses can result in acute toxicity, causing a rapid onset and obvious symptoms of toxic response, or chronic toxicity, caused by low dose exposure over a long period of time, typically resulting in cancers and other irreversible effects. In either scenario, the mycotoxins can enter the body via ingestion, skin contact, or inhalation.

We at SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County are trained in the removal of mold. We are here to help answer questions you may have and to offer sound practical advice. Call us at (704)0596-9700

Indoor Mold, How much do you really know?

10/20/2018 (Permalink)

An indoor mold problem can show itself in different ways. Some common indicators include:

  • Visible mold growth
  • Musty or moldy smell
  • Staining/discoloring of the ceiling or walls (water damage stains)
  • Known leak or water damage (within the past few years)

Any of the above should bring about concern with property owners or occupants as they can be an indicator of an indoor mold problem.

Unfortunately, while these conditions should warrant a reaction, many people don’t react until their health or the health of someone they know is impacted.

Despite the indicators, addressing a potential mold problem is important. The first step in this process is to verify whether or not you actually have a problem and, if one is present, the size of the problem.

Several environmental inspection companies are available to investigate a property to determine if a harmful mold growth and environmental contamination exists. During the property inspection, samples of the air and surfaces may be taken during the mold testing process. These samples should then be analyzed by an independent third party lab to detect the presence or absence of mold growth within the area in question.

If the investigation of the property concludes that the indoor environment is unsafe, mold remediation should be pursued. It is not recommended that mold be remediated by a private party, regular contractor, or maintenance worker as this can exacerbate the problem. The best choice for mold remediation is a professional mold remediation or damage restoration company that is experienced and certified in environmental remediation and decontamination such as SERVPRO of North Central Mecklenburg County.

Winston and Nichole

One thing that SERVPRO of North Central  train and learn new techniques.

This week Winston and Nichole were able to attend an area meeting. These meetings are great because they are educational, but allow the staff to have a little fun.

While attending a local training session by SERVPRO corporate employees Nichole and Winston learned things that will help them during the job as well as for customers.

After our employees come back from training we love to hear from the. When Nichole was asked what was her favorite part of the training she said, "It was good to hear from other franchises about what works for them and what doesn't. I also like the changes that are being made on the website. Website changes allow customers to see who they are dealing with and get feedback from other people who went through a situation just like them".
